In the opening match of the tournament USA happily survived Turkey. The Balkan team led 2-0 in sets and fought in the third set but they didn’t have power for more.

American attacker Michelle Bartsch Hackley with her 21 points helped USA to celebrated win of 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 15-11) over Turkey. Support came from opposite Kelly Murphy with 17 points and captain Jordan Larson-Burbach‘s 14 points.

The Turks gave their all, overwhelming their opponents with sustained pressure early and hanging into the death. Meliha Ismailoglu was the best scorer of the winning team with 18 points followed by middle blocker Eda Erdem Dundar 14 points.

USA will now have a day’s rest, as they prepare to take on Serbia on Friday while the Turks will meanwhile have to quickly dust off the disappointment and prepare for Serbia with whom they played tomorrow.
