The third-placed Foinikas Syros (11-7; 34 points) outplayed No.2 PAOK (14-4; 42 points), by a 3-2, partially 17-25, 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, 15-13, in Round 18. Thus, Foinikas dispelled PAOK’s chances to claim the top-seed for the playoffs since now they have 4 wins and 10 points less compared to the leaders in the standings Olympiacos S.F.P., with only four more rounds to be played until the end of the regular season.
A little experiment of PAOK coach Daniele Ricci, who put outside hitter Alexander Shafranovich to the libero position, did not pay him off, despite the fact Israeli player made 57% reception (23 digs, 3 errors) because the defending champs lost an important engine in the attack.
The Bulgarian Boyan Yordanov was impressive, scoring 36 points (3 aces) for Foinikas. His compatriot on the other side, Nikolay Uchikov, poured in 26 points while Kasandros Stingas made 6 kill blocks.
Olympiacos S.F.P. struggled with A.P.F.S.Iraklis Chalkidas, coming back twice from a set down before prevailing in the tie-break, partially 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 16-14, thanks to 18 points (6 kill blocks) from Bulgarian Todor Aleksiev and 18 kill blocks by a team.
