Practically every day one club revealed exchanging letters with the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) regarding the postponement of its match in some European cup due to coronavirus outbreak. Not even the official relocation and/or rescheduling of the encounters by the CEV is no guarantee that they will be played.

Unet e-work Busto Arsizio became the first Italian club that asked for a postponement of its European cup match. So far, only rivals of clubs from Italy requested the same. Italy is the most severely hit by the coronavirus outbreak in the Old Continent.

Busto revealed that, in the meantime, CEV relocated the 2020 CEV Cup quarterfinal rematch against Russia’s Dinamo Kazan to Maribor, Slovenia, to where it relocated several Champions League matches, instead of the initial decision to be played behind closed doors in Italy. The CEV didn’t change the date of the match (March 11). However, Busto asked the CEV to postpone the encounter “until a desired positive development of the coronavirus situation“.

Recall that the Italian female championship is suspended until further notice.

“The red and white team expressed its reasons through a letter sent to the CEV, underlining the danger of the Coronavirus situation, now no longer confined to Italy, but is, unfortunately, a worldwide phenomenon. It’s impossible to think today of travel, hotel stays, and competitions that would put the safety of athletes and staff even more at risk,“ Busto published on their website and added they now await the response from the CEV.

Slovenia, the country in which CEV relocated several matches of European cups, is no longer coronavirus-free “zone“ as officially 19 people got infected in the last few days.
