Cuba came out unbeaten and won the gold medal in the 15th Pan American Cup. At the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau, the team led by coach Nicolás Vives swept the home side, who couldn’t find the formula to stop the powerful attacks of the Caribbeans, fighting off a late attempt by Canada to extend the match to one more set. Opposite hitter Jesús Herrera of Cuba, who won their fourth overall gold in the Pan-Am Cup, led the scoring with 15 points. His teammate Osniel Melgarejo earned the MVP of the tournament award.

The team from the largest of the Antilles went through the entire event without losing a set and previously beat national teams of the Dominican Republic, Chile (twice), and the United States, who took third place after beating Chile 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21). Cuba, a team that also recently earned a place in next year’s FIVB Volleyball Nations League by winning the FIVB Challenger Cup and less than a month ago claimed the title in the Pan-American Cup NORCECA Final Six, secured a berth in the 2023 Pan American Games. Now, Cuba’s next challenge will be the FIVB World Championship, scheduled from August 26 to September 11 in Slovenia and Poland.
