After losing to Puerto Rico in Round 1 of the NORCECA Qualifications – Pool B for the 2018 World Champs, Mexico knew they had to beat the hosts of the tournament Cuba to keep their chances to achieve the goal. And they did it in a powerful way, by sweeping the Cuban National Team in front of their crowd in Pinar del Río, partially 25-17, 25-23, 25-23. Now, both sides have 1-1 before the final round. Daniel Vargas was the top scorer of the game with 20 points, the only one from Mexico with double digits, whilst Miguel David Gutiérrez notched 11 for Cuba.
Out of all four teams in the Qualifying Tournament, Puerto Rico is the closest to grab one of the two tickets from this tournament for the World Championship next year after beating Guatemala in straight sets as they got a 2-0 record and maximum 6 points. Jean Carlos Ortíz topped the Puerto Ricans with 14 points while Andy Leonardo from Guatemala, who are at 0-2, scored game-high 15 points.
