JPN M: Toray successful in V.League opener thanks to Rouzier, Edgar’s textbook attack pushes Thunders to win

Toray Arrows opened the new Japanese Men’s Volleyball Championship season with a win for which they needed five sets.

Former France National Team member Antonin Rouzier led the way of Toray Arrows to the 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 25-18, 22-25, 15-12) win against Sakai Blazers in the opening match of the 2019/20 V.League Division 1 Men regular season. One-time European champion chipped in 21 points, finishing the thrilling match that was held in Shimabara as the top scorer. Puerto Rican opposite hitter Maurice Torres put down 18 points for the losing side.

Russian giant Dimitriy Muserskiy got off the season on the right foot by pouring in 20 points for Suntory Sunbirds in their 3-0 away victory over newcomers Wolf Dogs Nagoya.

With 18 points, Kunihiro Shimizu drove champions Panasonic Panthers to claiming their premiere victory: 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19) vs. VC Nagano Tridents.

The vice-champions JT Thunders Hiroshima were also successful in the season opening. Australian Thomas Edgar was nearly perfect in the attack (76.9%, 10/13), pouring in 16 points (4 hill blocks) against Ōita Miyoshi Weisse Adler.
