Vermeulen and his staff were relieved of their duties with the Egypt National Team after failing to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In the African Qualifier at home in Cairo, with Tunisia, Algeria, and Cameroon as rivals, Egypt finished 2nd. Thus, the Dutchman ended the collaboration with the Egyptian Volleyball Federation after only 9 months.

The Egypt National Team will now turn their attention to the next continental championship, which will be held in 2021 and in which they will look to improve the placement from the last edition of the tournament when they were 4th placed.
