Luzern was the biggest surprise of the Swiss Championship last season, being within the reach of the first-ever trophy as they reached the playoff semifinals. Luzern progressed to the national Cup semifinals, too. However, the premature ending of the season due to the coronavirus pandemic in mid-March postponed their title aspirations for 2020/21.
Since they remained without the Australian head coach Liam Sketcher, Luzern were forced to seek for his replacement and it came in the form of Italian Alessandro Lodi. The 41-year-old expert came from the Finnish women’s club LiigaPloki with whom he won the national Cup. Taking over the bench of Luzern won’t be Lodi’s first engagement in Switzerland as he coached the women’s side of Sm’Aesch Pfeffingen in 2013/14.
Luzern will also have to find a replacement for three starters from the last season: the top scorer – Latvian Edvarts Buivids, setter Mathis Jucker (both joined LINDAREN Volley Amriswil), and Bahamian middle blocker Shonari Hepburn.
