CA W: Costa Rica fourth consecutive champion

Costa Rica beat Belize 3-0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-14) to obtain their fourth consecutive AFECAVOL Girls’ U-18 title at Gymnasium Alfonso Gordillo in Guatemala City.

Costa Rica confirmed their supremacy in this age-group with a total of six titles. The recurring champions finished the tournament with perfect 5-0 win-loss record and a total of 23 points.

Against Belize, Costa Rica had an impressive advantage of 37-9 in spikes and 14-1 in service points. They showed consistency and a well-defined strategy throughout the whole match.

Once again leading scorer for Costa Rica was spiker Allison Font with 17 points, followed by captain Mariana Solano who scored 11 points. Spiker Mya Musa led Belize with 5 points.

“We are too excited, thrilled with the title” indicated Solano. “We came determined to win; our hard work and applying all our skills achieved in practice back home made it possible” she added.

“Costa Rica was too strong for us and we were too nervous, we lacked communication but Belize had a good tournament” said captain Karen Quan.

Martin Rodriguez dedicated this tournament to his newborn baby girl “I am so happy with everything, my technical staff worked hard to prepare this team and we reached our goal. Our strategy in serves paid off not only today, but in every match. I want to congratulate Lupita because she has a very promising group and they must continue their hard work to see better results.”

“I don’t discuss medals or points with my team; I just want the girls to play hard. Costa Rica beat us with pure serves and the girls weren’t able to adjust to basic changes. My team did a good job in the whole tournament” expressed coach Lupita Quan.

Spiker Allison Font from Costa Rica was awarded as the Most Valuable Player of the 10th Girls’ U-18 Central American Championship. Also from Costa Rica libero Valeria Monge was the Best Receiver.

From Belize, captain Karen Quan was awarded as the Best Setter, middle blocker Kevanna Sebastian and libero NayalaTun were granted the trophies for Best Blocker and Best Digger respectively.

Form hosts Guatemala, Christa Reinoso received the award for Best Server.
