NORCECA CH M: USA downs St Lucia, first victories for Canada and Cuba

The United States defeated Saint Lucia at the NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship opener in straight sets (25-12, 25-10, 25- 11).

Troy Murphy finished with 13 points as the top scorer for USA, while David Lee and Micah Christenson added seven apiece. Saint Lucia’s Jospeh Clercent had seven points while Julian Bissette scored six.

American head coach John Speraw stated:

“It was good to get out there and get the opportunity to compete again. I think the guys played pretty well got out and took care improving on the aspects of the game we didn’t look, but did a nice job.”

USA captain Sean Rooney:

“We are happy with this result today. We have a mixed team. We have some guys with three Olympics, two Olympics, one Olympic, is a mix of youth and experience.”

Jason Octave, captain of Saint Lucia:

I think there is not much to say. It was a very physical match and we tried to do our best in our side. We faced a good team and the momentum never changed for us.”

Charlery Kendall, coach of Saint Lucia:

“We really expected to have a very tough match, it is one of the best teams of the world. We had nothing to lose and now we have to prepare for our next match.”

Rodolfo Sanchez starts with a victory as Cuban senior team’s coach

CubaBahamas 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-7)

Cuban Senior National Team had no problems to begin the Rodolfo Sanchez’s era with a victory at the Norceca Men’s Continental Championship.

The Cubans defeated The Bahamas 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-7) with Rolando Cepeda as their best weapon with 10 points, including 3 aces. Inovel Romero and Jorber Quintana scored 9 apiece. Prince’Tanique Wilson was the best scorer for the Bahamas with 8 points.

Hosts Canada grab first victory in Langley

CanadaGuatemala 3:0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-10)

Canada, host of the Norceca Men’s Continental Championship won 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-10) against Guatemala in the last match of first day of competition. 

Gavin Schmitt scored 12 points (including 2 aces) for the Canadian team while Rudy Verhoeff finished tallied 11. Guatemala’s Andy Alexis Leonardo scored 11 points for the Central American squad that will face Mexico on Tuesday. The other two teams that will take action on Day 2 are Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic.
