ECH M: Finnish team empties piggy bank to fly in supporters for quarterfinal in Aarhus

by WoV

The Finland men's national team stands on the verge of a quarterfinal match which could open their way to Copenhagen's Parken Stadium and give them a chance to improve their best ever finish at a European Championships - a fourth place in Moscow, Russia in 2007. They will face Italy/The Netherlands.

Finnish media person Aleksi Valavuori has chartered a special plane to fly volleyball fans to Denmark to support the national team for this crucial game. Such operation is not a dummy run for this sport enthusiast as he organized a similar trip two weeks ago when he put Finnish basketball fans on a plane to Slovenia to cheer for the national team during their EuroBasket campaign.

About one hundred fifty enthusiastic Finnish fans will flock to Aarhus today to follow the action live and support the “Suomi”. Plane and match tickets were mostly sold to sponsors, partners, and also to the Finnish Olympic Committee.

Finland captain, Antti Siltala, will be able to count on special support as 14 youngsters from club Vieremän Lentopallo-92, where he started his career, will be among the Finnish supporters after local partner Ponsse paid for their trip.

The Finnish players were also generous as they decided to allocate some money from the team’s piggy bank to sponsor a volleyball coach, along with one of his junior players, to attend the game.

Spurred on by the boisterous Finnish fans, Tuomas Sammelvuo’s players will try to use this “home” support to qualify for the semi-finals.

Should they manage to reach the Final Four, don’t be surprised if you see lots of blue and white flags all around Copenhagen.
