ROM W: Dinamo Romprest wants to make it out of pool play for first time

by WoV

Romania’s Dinamo Romprest BUCURESTI caused last year one of the major sensations in the prelims of the 2013 CEV Volleyball Champions League by beating Galatasaray Daikin in Istanbul. The plans for the coming season are very ambitious as Dinamo is set to represent once again Romania in Europe’s elite competition with the goal to make it through the pool phase.

In order to achieve this goal, Dinamo signed US American libero Nicole Davis, a double Olympic medalist, who last year had played in Germany for the likes of DRESDNER SC. Davis was recently introduced to the Romanian media in a press conference attended by the local officials as well as by the main sponsor of Dinamo

Next to Davis, Dinamo has transferred a good share of the Bulgarian national team that this past summer won bronze in the European League finals as well as competed in the World Grand Prix for the first time. The trio includes setter Diana Nenova, who last year had played in Azerbaijan for Lokomotiv BAKU, middle-blocker Tsvetelina Zarkova, and wing-spiker Mariya Karakasheva. The tallest Volleyball player in Romania, Loredana Filipas, who is only 16 but stands at 197 cm, and another youngster, Irina Andreica, were also added to the roster of the team.

“I think that we have put together a very good team for the coming season” says general manager Marian Stefan. “Two years ago we beat ASPTT MULHOUSE of France and last year we achieved that away win with Galatasaray. In our third participation we want to make it through the prelims and I think that in order to achieve this goal the first game with Atom Trefl SOPOT will be extremely important. As for the domestic season, our goal is to win the national league”

“We have an experienced team because also the players added for this season have some good international experience” adds team captain Alida Marcovici. “I think we are going to be a real competitor and an opponent that people will find hard to beat. This is the first time we have good chances to make it through the prelims. VakifBank is the clear favorite in the group, and we will fight for second place with SOPOT and GENT Dames of Belgium”

“I decided to come to Romania and play here for Dinamo after a discussion with Mr. Stefan” concluded US American libero Nicole Davis. “I do believe in this project and even though we have been assigned to a tough group, I am sure that we can stand this challenge”.
