The men’s team of Tirana caught a very promising start of their campaign in the 2013/2014 season as they claimed – for the first time in history – the Federation Cup by routing Studenti in straight sets in the final game of the tournament held at “Asllan Rusi” sports hall in Albania’s capital city.

The competition was joined by the four teams that had achieved the best results in the past season, and namely Studenti, Tirana, Vllaznia and Skenderbeu

Last week Studenti had represented Albania in the 2013 edition of the BVA Cup finishing in second place after losing to Turkey’s heavyweight Fenerbahce Grundig ISTANBUL. However, back in action Studenti could not display the same quality and eventually had to fight hard before edging Skenderbeu 3:1 in the semis (23-25, 25-16, 25-17, and 25-12). In the other semi-final game Tirana downed Vllaznia in straight sets (25-22, 25-18, and 25-16). Volleyball fans from Albania’s capital city were expecting a very close final in the derby starring Tirana and Studenti. However, Tirana imposed their rule right from the start cruising to a speedy 25-16 to win the first set. The game was tighter in the next one with Tirana pocketing a provisional 2:0 lead after storming to the final 25-22. Things did not change in the third set but once more Tirana showed great composure in the final phases (25-23) to start the celebrations for their first title of the season and first win in the competition.

“I do not know what to say: I started working with this team only a few months ago and it is a great joy to win this competition” said Tirana head coach Arben Sako. “Of course I am happy especially for my players who beat the reigning national champions in the final and I hope that they can continue to perform the same way also in the remainder of the season”.
