Just when fans thought they’d seen the last of Robertlandy Simón in a Cuban jersey, the 38-year-old volleyball icon has made a surprise return to the Cuban men’s national team for the2025 Volleyball Nations League.
After announcing his retirement from international play last year, Simón reached out to head coach Jesús Cruz asking for another shot—on his own terms. According to Cruz, the plan is for Simón to join the squad in week three of the VNL, during their games in Poland, keeping him fresh for the World Championship later this year.
This comeback is big news. Simón is one of Cuba’s most experienced and respected players, having led the team to silver medals in both the 2010 World Championship and the 2009 Grand Champions Cup. He returned to the national stage in 2019 and helped Cuba win the NORCECA Championship that same year.
And it’s not just Simón coming back. Stars like Miguel Ángel López, Marlon Yant, and Osniel Melgarejo are also part of a solid lineup that’s determined to make 2025 a standout year. Before their VNL opener, the team will warm up with friendlies in Argentina, then head to Brazil for their opening matches from June 11–15.
