Bulgaria’s men’s national volleyball team has reached new heights under the guidance of head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini, securing a silver medal at the World Championship in Manila and climbing into the top 10 of the FIVB world rankings for the first time in years.
Bulgaria’s men’s national volleyball coach Gianlorenzo Blengini shared his reflections after guiding the team to a historic silver medal at the World Championship in Manila. Speaking during his appearance on Block Out by Sportal.bg, the Italian expert emphasized how deeply he now identifies with Bulgaria following two years at the helm. The emotional reception in Sofia, where thousands of fans gathered to welcome the players, confirmed the national impact of their achievement and highlighted the passion surrounding Bulgarian volleyball.
Blengini’s tactical sharpness also stood out during the tournament, earning him the nickname “Kiko Hawk-Eye” for his accurate video challenge decisions, particularly in key moments against Slovenia. Together with his staff, he built a foundation of discipline and trust that pushed the team beyond expectations.
He acknowledged the sacrifices made throughout the campaign, with players and staff devoting months of preparation to reach this level. While proud of the silver medal, Blengini warned that greater challenges now lie ahead, as Bulgaria will no longer be underestimated by rivals. Maintaining focus, humility, and consistency will be essential to continue their rise.
Facing Italy in the final carried special emotions for Blengini, given his long history with the team and players, but his commitment to Bulgaria’s success remained absolute. His vision extends beyond the national squad, stressing the need for Bulgarian players to grow through stronger club-level competition if the country is to compete consistently with world leaders like Italy and Poland.
The silver medal has already transformed Bulgaria’s status in global volleyball. Jumping from 23rd to 9th in the world rankings, the team has reestablished itself among the sport’s elite and strengthened its long-term ambition of qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
