Iranian girl Ghoncheh Ghavami, who was arrested in Tehran because she tried to attend a volleyball game, was sentenced to one year in prison, said her lawyer, according to AFP.

The trial of Ghavami (25), who was arrested in June at a stadium in Iranian capital, where the national volleyball team of that country had played against Italy, was held last month.

“Upon conviction, she was sentenced to one year in prison”, said her lawyer.

However, it is not explained what this young woman was charged with. Iranian officials have said that she was arrested for security reasons that have nothing to do with the volleyball game.

She is in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison for 126 days already. On the Facebook page ‘Free Ghoncheh Ghavami ‘, where her friends and family launched a campaign for her release, there are pictures of her and the slogan: “Jailed for wanting to watch the volleyball match”.

On this Facebook page was confirmed that she was sentenced to one year in prison.

Head of Iranian Police told reporters that “it is not in the public interest for women and men to attend such events together”.

Women are not allowed to attend the football matches in Iran, too, and officials explained this with the fact that they are, in this way, protected by the vulgar behavior of male fans.

Iran was a cool country once … some 40 years ago. Simply cannot believe what’s going on.
