Canadian national team won their first ever NORCECA Continental Championship after beating Cuba in the finals held in Mexican city of Córdoba 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17).
Despite pretty persuasive score at the end, the game was very competitive with John Gordon Perrin finished as top scorer for the winning team, 18 points. He was followed by tournament’s MVP Nicholas Hoag, who had 15.
Osmany Uriarte scored 12 points, while Javier Ernesto Jiménez and Rolando Cepeda collected 10 each for Cuba.
In the absence of USA, who secured their 2016 Olympics spot by winning the 2015 World Cup, four teams from NORCECA Championship booked their ticket for Olympic qualifiers – Canada, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico (Puerto Rico beat Mexico in the bronze medal match).
“We are happy for this victory. We have played several times against them. We came here missing a couple of key players, but we fought hard for every point. Cuba is always a great opponent,” Canadian coach Glenn Hoag said after finals.
