Lucia Fresco and Maria Calvete charted 23 and 19 points respectively as the top offensive weapons for Argentina while Tanya Acosta added 13. Calvete totaled seven blocks while Fresco scored four aces.
Yoana Palacio led Cuba with 19 points followed by Alena Rojas and Sulian Matienzo with 15 and 12 respectively.
Both teams had 11 blocks while Argentina held a 12-7 margin in service winners.
“After the first set we caught our game rhythm and got the victory against a very difficult opponent like Cuba,” Argentina’s Antonella Curatola said.
“Both teams had good serves today but they were better than us and claimed the win,” Cuba’s Palacio said.
“Cuba are a very difficult to play at the net so we had to focus on defense, reception and service,” Argentina’s Horacio Bastit commented. “Our reception was not that good but the serves were the key for us.”
“The service of Argentina hurt us,” Cuba’s Juan Carlos Gala said. “We were not able to recover after losing the second set 27-25.”
