Shocking news is coming from Montenegro – the multi-year participant of the CEV Champions League and one of the most successful teams from Balkan region has seized to exist.

Budvanska Rivijera

Budvanska Rivijera

The people in Budva won’t watch men’s volleyball for the first time after 40 years since they had an opportunity to watch Budvanska Rivijera’s first game on 14th May 1977 against Centro-Jadran Bar.

They just have disappeared from the volleyball map as a consequence of making some bad moves over the past few years.

Budvanska Rivijera is a team without the youth squad, senior squad and board as well. There are huge debts towards the sports center “Mediteran” and some players.

Budvanska Rivijera have 18 titles in their trophy room which makes them the best team in the history of Montenegrin volleyball.

This is a big blow for volleyball community as well…

As always, many teams leave the competitions saying that, they lose his main sponsors, but others like budva and teams in the spain women superleague like Murcia and others, were bad managed and their owners expend all club money in his personal life, when u have a sport team u have to take care first of the players, that are ur main source of work. some people dont respect others and thats why we keep losing volleyball teams around the world, u can lose ur sponsor but u must paid all ur debts before closing, some suscesful teams cease to exist like Piemonte Volley aka Cuneo or the mighty Sisley Treviso, Its a shame a we will miss they games. But the show must go on.

Volleyball became a business, and if people who lead a club have no business acumen, a club will not last long. Sisley was one of the best clubs in the world but people who led it couldn’t find a sponsor after Beneton decided to stop being the sponsor.
Montenegro is still struggling with transition from socialism like all former Yugoslav countries and professional volleyball is one of the last places where sponsors will invest their money. All sports there have financial issues, including soccer as most popular one.

Re: @former_player I totally agree with you but if there is no business motive I can understand that you make your budget lower in order to keep the team anyway. I t is bad for volleyball not only in Europe but also generally in Montenegro that there won’t be any team even close to make it to the international stage. For me in the last decade club volleyball is going down and one of the main reasons is that every year there are more and more games for the national teams (more days for them) and that means less days and games for the club’s competitions. The sponsors get less visibility and that means are ready to give less money. And of course other sports are using this opportunity to get their peace of cake.
