It was not a happy night for the 2’400 fans in attendance but still, taking into account the quality of the opponent, the home heroines could be satisfied with their premiere in Pool D.
The hosts caught a good start (8:3, 13:5) and Eczacibasi had problems in controlling the tricky service of Elzbieta Skowronska, so the opening set finished with the score of 25-20 for Tauron MKS.
The score remained close up to 8 all in the second set but good blocks and a solid reception did help Eczacibasi cruise to the front (9:16). The hosts fought their way back to 22 all but in the end it was Eczacibasi that could pocket that section of the game (22-25).
Eczacibasi got up 7:8 in set 3 and with Neslihan Darnel from the serving line could get some more points widening the gap (11:15) and showing all of their quality for a speedy 16-25.
The last set was marked by many mistakes of Tauron MKS while the various stars of Eczacibasi – Lioubov Shashkova, Darnel, Maja Poljak and Senna Usic Jogunica – stood out in every single rally. Local head coach Waldemar Kawka tried to change that situation but it was Busra Cansu who finished the game with an ace.
“We are very happy with this win. We knew they were a good team and could not catch a good start; we started playing well in the second set and this finally was a good debut and start in the competition. We could clearly see that the spectators here love Volleyball, they were very cheerful tonight” said Eczacibasi captain Esra Gümüs.
“We know we could have played better; we started well but then failed. Eczacibasi is one of the best teams in the league” singled out home captain Magdalena Sliwa.
