Italy needed only three sets to upset Belarus (25-20, 25-17, and 25-20) with the girls from Minsk missing out on a good opportunity in the second set where they went up 12:9 before losing the next six points; Italy did not waste that chance and pocketed the second set paving the way for its speedy win.
On the other hand, Russia had some kind of a training session with Estonia, and the score (25-8, 25-10, and 25-21) clearly reflects the absolute supremacy of the home side.
To open the competition held in Russia’s capital city Belgium had edged Norway, doing so also in straight sets (25-12, 25-14, and 25-14) with Norway keeping the score a bit tight only in the early phases of each set before Belgium broke away to easily go for a clean sweep.
