The 2020/21 Russian women’s volleyball Championship newcomers, Lipetsk, set up a sensation in Round 1.

A long-awaited return of Lipetsk to the country’s top division got crowned with a truly enchanting result.

After 10 years, the team from western Russia played its first Superliga Parimatch game and downed the tournament’s most titled side Uralochka-NTMK, commanded by the world record holder for most years spent continuously at the helm of a single team – Nikolay Karpol.

After looking like mere debutantes in the first two sets on the road, Lipetsk players threw off their psychological shackles and prevailed by a 3-2 (11-25, 12-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13). Thus, Kseniya Parubets’ magnificent display for Uralochka of 38 points was in vain. Irina Sazonova scored 28 points for the winning side.

The reigning champions Dinamo-Ak Bars, Lokomotiv, Dinamo Krasnodar, and Proton recorded straight-set wins each.
