Kaliningrad crowd (Russia) had the opportunity to see another huge game from Dutch Lonneke Slöetjes. She became the best scorer of the Dutch Team for the third consecutive time – 26 points.
Lise van Hecke was Belgium’s best scorer with 14 points but her performance was not enough for the “Yellow Tigers” to achieve the first win in this year’s World Grand Prix campaign.
Italy’s National Team are not at their best, but finished the first weekend with a hard-fought Pool B win over Japan, in Rio de Janeiro 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-27, 15-8).
Italy played almost perfectly in the first two sets by outblocking and outspiking rivals but then started to make mistakes (30 overall against Japan’s 21), allowing Asian side to equalize and have a chance for full turnaround.
Luckily for Italy, they had Paola Egonu, who was unstoppable until the very end of the match when she was too tired and had to be replaced. She scored 30 points while Sarina Koga had 17 in Japan.
