After parting ways with the Slovenian Volleyball Federation, rumors that had been circulating in volleyball circles have now been confirmed—Gheorghe Crețu, a 56-year-old Romanian coach, has officially been appointed as the new head coach of Serbia’s men’s senior volleyball team.
Cretu, who currently coaches Poland’s Skra Bełchatów expressed his excitement about the role. “It’s a great honor to coach Serbia, a country with a rich sports tradition. This opportunity is very special, not only for me but for any coach in the world,” he stated in his first remarks for the Serbian Volleyball Federation.

The decision follows Cretu’s recent departure from Slovenia, where he guided the national team to a bronze medal at the 2023 European Championship and secured their first-ever qualification for the Paris Olympics. His move to Serbia ends weeks of speculation, solidifying his position as one of the most sought-after coaches in European volleyball.
Cretu plans to gradually introduce younger players into the Serbian squad, blending fresh talent with the experience of seasoned veterans. “Together with the more experienced players, we’ll find the right path forward. I know this is a big challenge, but that’s exactly why I accepted it,” he said.
