The teams of Argentina and Brazil opened the South American Men’s Championship with victories in matches played at the Nilson Nelson Colosseum in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Argentina beat Colombia 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-17), and host Brazil defeated Peru also in straight sets, 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-18).
In the first South American match, Argentina made debut with a 3-0 victory (25/20, 25/19, 25/17) over Colombia. Argentine Agustín Loser was the top scorer of the match with 16 points, while Andres Felipe Piza Hernandez scored 8 points for Colombia.
The Peruvians came out on the field after 19 months without an official or friendly match and could not avoid defeat in straight sets (12-25, 19-25, 18-25) against Brazil, winners of 33 South American championship titles. Brazilian Alan Souza was the top scorer of the match with 13 points, followed by Gabriel Vaccari Kavalkievicz with 10. For the Peruvian side, Daniel Urueña was the top scorer with 6 points.
Due to the withdrawal of Venezuela from the competition (situation with COVID-19), a new system and schedule of matches for the South American Men’s Championship has been determined.
The competition is played in a single round-robin format (each team plays with every other team once). In the previous format, it was planned that the tournament would be played in two pools, and the two best teams from each group would advance to the semifinals.
