Cuban opposite hitter Vargas has obtained Turkish citizenship, two years after such rumors appeared. An official event took place in Istanbul with the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from whom she symbolically received a jersey of the country’s national team. However, this is more than just a symbolic gesture as Fenerbahçe Opet player, whose colors she defends for 4 seasons, will actually wear this jersey in the near future.
With the completion of the citizenship process, Vargas has started counting days and months before getting the right to play for Turkey Women, as the officials of the Turkish federation (TVF) stressed in the ceremony. According to the procedures of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), she is to wait 2 years for that (the procedure for changing sports nationality, i.e. federation of origin), meaning she will be able to compete in Paris Olympics in 2024.
The news surprised the world of volleyball given that Vargas recently received Serbian citizenship, too, and started the naturalization process, at least that’s what her head coach in Fenerbahçe but also Serbia Women head coach Zoran Terzić explained. Furthermore, in a statement for our website, Vargas stressed that she doesn’t intend to change her federation of origin, which is, of course, Cuban.
