No.4 University of Hawai’i booked their ticket to the Final Four of the 2017 NCAA Men’s Volleyball Division 1 Championship by prevailing in an Opening Round five-setter against fifth seed Penn State, 23-25, 27-25, 17-25, 25-14, 15-4 at the “St. John Arena” in Columbus, Ohio.

Thus, the Rainbow Warriors tied the school’s all-time single-season record with 27-5. Hawai’i scheduled semifinal duel with the hosts of the Final Six, and also title holders, Ohio State University (May 4), thanks to an impressive display in the tie-break, which they finished with 8-0 run. The Rainbow Warriors had 17.5 total blocks against the Nittany Lions (21-11), tying their season-high.

Sophomore outside hitter from the Netherlands, Stijn van Tilburg, led Hawai’i with 20 kills, adding seven digs and six blocks, while fellow sophomore outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier added 13 kills, nine digs and six blocks. Freshman opposite Calvin Mende made 18 kills for the Pennsylvania State University.

No. 3 Brigham Young University – BYU (25-4) swept sixth seed Barton College (23-6) in the other Opening Round duel to advance to the Final Four and face No.2 California State University, Long Beach (May 4), partially 25-19, 25-11, 25-15. Brenden Sander led the Cougars with 11 kills and eight blocks.
