ECH W: Serbia wins Pool D derby, not leaving a single set to Germany

Serbian national team won derby of Pool D at the European Championship and made a huge step towards claiming leadership. It beat the greatest rival for this goal, Germany, in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19).

Serbia had a perfect start of the first set, getting 3-0, 6-3 and 8-5 on TTO number one. Bošković pulled forward Serbians, while Rašić converted several tipovers on the net after amazing serves from her teammates 10-5. Brinker and Brandt returned Germany into life, but Serbia kept destroying rival’s reception with clever serves. The key moment in Set 1 occured at 11-10 for Serbia when it took one long rally. Afterwards, Mihajlović led Serbians in attack while libero Popović was digging perfectly behind 16-12. German head coach Pedullà was forced to replace first setter Apitz, but it was in vain, 25-18 for Serbia.

Bošković bombed German defense in the first half of Set 2 from behind 3rd meter line, converting few counter attacks, quite enough for 7-2 lead of Serbia. Finally, Germany stabilized reception, while Kozuch and Beier started to score for 4-0 run and for approaching to 9-8. Germans even managed to equalize at 11-all but three points in a row from Serbia returned gap to its side 14-12. Mihajlović and Bošković were calm and precise in the finish for 25-22.

In Set 3, Germany had a great chance to reduce result. With good blocking and team play in defense, it gained 8-5. Then, Malešević entered into the court and took over from Bošković and Mihajlović. Serbia regained advantage 10-9 and played perfectly until the end, scoring in series for final 25-19.

Top scorer in Serbia was Bošković with 18 points while in Germany, Kozuch had 11.
