The question of how long is a volleyball game starts with what the timing includes. Official set durations count timeouts and challenges. Between-set intervals are excluded, as are warm-up and ceremonies. Breaks belong in your evening’s plans. The full stretch from opening serve to match point is the useful measure when arranging a ride home.

Soccer, or football to most of the world, offers a familiar comparison: its fixed clock runs through two 45-minute halves plus added time. Football’s timetable helps organize TV slots, live scores and markets for football betting with bitcoin. Premier League games averaged 99 minutes 44 seconds excluding half-time in 2024-25, almost matching volleyball’s median. Volleyball ranged from 53 to 155 minutes.

How Long Is a Volleyball Game in Official Match Records?

Our calculation covers every completed senior match with official set durations across 10 tournaments in official FIVB records. Alongside men’s and women’s VNL from 2024-2026, the sample includes the Paris 2024 Olympics and the 2025 World Championships. Playing time adds up each set’s duration, including interruptions within sets. Between-set intervals are excluded, along with warm-up and ceremonies.

The table uses official FIVB match data to show how playing time varies by set count, including the overall mean and median alongside the sample’s shortest and longest matches.

Across 852 matches, 10% finished below 68 minutes and 10% exceeded 127 minutes of set play. Standard intervals push 32% of matches beyond two hours from first serve to last point. For planning, a three-set match is about 75 minutes plus two 3-minute breaks, roughly 81 minutes, while a five-setter is about 124 plus four breaks, roughly 136 minutes.

Set count offers the most useful starting point when considering how long is a volleyball game. Close sets can upset that estimate. The longest straight-set match took 121 minutes, longer than the shortest five-setter at 99 minutes. A straight-set result can still fill an evening.

How Many Sets in Volleyball Decide the Match?

A pro volleyball match ends when a team wins three sets, so it lasts anywhere from three to five sets. Regular sets go to 25 points with a two-point winning margin. At two sets apiece, the deciding set goes to 15 with the same margin. The score has no cap.

Straight-set results were the most common outcome, accounting for 42.0% of matches. Four-set matches contributed 32.5%, and five-set matches 25.5%. A deciding set remains a meaningful planning possibility. The match stays open as long as both teams can still reach the winning set total.

How Long Is a Volleyball Set?

A regular pro volleyball set averaged 25.9 minutes, with a median of 26 minutes across 3,050 sets. The shortest lasted 15 minutes and the longest 59. The deciding fifth set averaged 17.8 minutes. Its median was 17 minutes and its maximum 37.

The shorter target usually means a quicker set. Close scores can keep it going, though, because volleyball’s requirement to win by a clear margin keeps the set alive when neither side can pull away late on.

Extra points make a measurable difference: 354 regular sets, or 11.6%, continued beyond the usual winning target and averaged 31.7 minutes, compared with 25.1 minutes for sets ending at 25. A close finish changes the timetable as well as the tension.

The extreme example was Argentina’s 50-48 opening-set win against Poland in men’s VNL on June 28, 2026, lasting 59 minutes, the longest set in VNL history. Poland nevertheless won the match 3-1.

An average match contained 169.8 rallies. Each point took 34.4 seconds of set time, including gaps between rallies. Timeouts and video challenges count, too. By following the match through its pauses, the measure describes the pace viewers experience across the set as they wait for play to resume after each interruption.

Each team may request up to two timeouts per set, lasting 30 seconds each. Requested timeouts already count toward set duration. Only the separate between-set intervals need adding to the recorded playing time for the standard elapsed-time estimate.

Men’s vs Women’s Match Times

Men’s pro volleyball matches averaged 101 minutes of playing time, compared with 94 minutes for women’s matches, across equal samples of 426 matches. In deciding-set matches, the difference narrowed: men’s five-setters averaged 125 minutes and women’s 122.

Since men’s matches also ran longer at every set count, match format explains only part of the gap between the averages; the duration of the sets themselves matters, too. At 44.8%, women’s matches ended in straight sets more often, compared with 39.2% for men. Both factors matter.

Across tournaments, the mix varied. All times in the breakdown exclude intervals between sets.

World Championship matches averaged 91.2 minutes, compared with 98.7 in the VNL. Five-setters accounted for 18.0% at the World Championships and 26.8% in the VNL, so the competitions also differed in how often matches reached a deciding set.

VNL Matches Are Getting Longer

VNL volleyball matches grew longer across the measured seasons, both in total playing time and within regular sets. The combined men’s and women’s figures show the change across several measures.

VNL SeasonMatchesAverage MatchAverage Regular SetSeconds per PointFive-Set Share
202420892.7 minutes25.0 minutes33.320.7%
202523299.3 minutes26.1 minutes34.529.3%
2026232103.4 minutes27.1 minutes35.729.7%

More matches reached a deciding set. Regular sets also lasted longer as more set time passed per point, so the increase in the average match length came from more than the extra fifth sets alone.

The cause remains uncertain. Seconds per point includes pauses, leaving the records unable to separate longer rallies from longer interruptions. The measured increase describes the viewing commitment, while an explanation would require evidence about what happened within that time.

The VNL expanded from 16 to 18 teams per gender in 2025. The larger field supplies context for the comparison. Establishing whether expansion affected match length would require further analysis.

The Longest and Shortest Matches

The longest pro match in this sample was Brazil’s 3-2 victory over Canada in men’s VNL on June 28, 2026, with 155 minutes of set play. Between-set intervals stretched the viewing commitment further.

At the other extreme, Italy beat Cuba 3-0 at the women’s World Championship on August 24, 2025, in 53 minutes of set play. The set scores were 25-9, 25-8 and 25-16. Italy kept every set clear of extra points.

The winning margin within sets and the number of sets both matter. A viewer checking the score needs both pieces of information to judge how much volleyball might remain.

High School and College Volleyball Planning

A best-of-five high school volleyball match usually lasts 60-90 minutes, depending on the number of sets, according to World of Volley. For parents, the question of how long does a volleyball game last begins with the level of play and the event’s format. For a tournament day, ask the organizer about court availability and gaps between fixtures.

For parents and young players considering college scholarship odds, NCAA rosters hold about 4.0% as many players as girls’ high school volleyball, and 3.6% for boys. These figures describe participation, not scholarship award rates.

Before arranging pickup, ask whether the listed time means warm-up or first serve. Check the interval arrangements, too. At the organizer’s request, the competent body can approve lengthening the break between the second and third sets to as much as 10 minutes. Keep the ride flexible until the match’s final set is clear.

FAQ

The big difference is volleyball’s spread: 53-155 minutes of set play.
