POOL D (Gdańsk, Poland)
France opened the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Pool D, Gdańsk, Poland) by dominating FIVB Challenger Cup winner Slovenia: 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-23).
These 2 teams faced each other for the first time after the 2015 CEV European Championship final in which France claimed the first-ever continental title. And the result was the same, a straight-set victory of “Les Bleus“.
France experienced a part of an atmosphere which will be prepared for them tomorrow in, probably, a direct duel for the Tokyo ticket against the tournament hosts Poland. The Ergo Arena in Gdańsk, which was well packed despite the fact that Poland ended their match earlier, openly cheered for Slovenia, the French federation (FFV) reported.
Earvin Ngapeth scored 14 points for France through 70% attack. Tonček Štern scored 13 for Slovenia.
In a face-off between the world champions and African titleholders, Poland easily prevailed over Tunisia, by a 3-0, and are ready to battle France in the match that raised tensions even before it has started.
Aleksander Śliwka scored game-high 10 points, while Karol Kłos added 4 kill blocks. Wilfredo León played his first official match for Poland and scored 6 points in 2 sets. Recall how his first-ever match for Poland went. Ali Bongui notched 9 points for Tunisia.
