Brazil did not shine but recorded a win in Pool A opener of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, in Varna, Bulgaria.

Brazil-vs-Puerto-Rico

Brazil-vs-Puerto-Rico

Puerto Rico were breathing down Brazil’s neck due to too many errors (22 in total vs. Puerto Rico’s 14) of the “Seleção“, especially in the reception, in the 1st and the 3rd set but could not take at least one of them.

Brazil’s head coach Renan Dal Zotto was not satisfied with how his team has played in the 3rd set and made 3 changes in the middle of it, introducing Alan, Maique and Cachopa from the bench instead of Maurício Borges, Thales and Bruninho. The trio seemed to inject some new energy for their team on the court and Brazil enforced favoritism in key moments to celebrate the victory that will give them a swing for the remaining 2 games in the pool: 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19).

Brazil kept the perfect record against Puerto Rico at major world level tournaments (6-0).

Ricardo Lucarelli scored 15 points (5 kill blocks) for the South American side. Pablo Guzmán made 11 points for the Caribbean side.
