OQT M: Iran recover from knockdown against Cuba, Russia show Mexico no mercy

Iran survived a thrilling tie-breaker against Cuba on Day 1 of the FIVB Men’s Volleyball International Qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Iran were knocked down by Cuba in Pool E encounter in Saint Petersburg, Russia, but the Asian side managed to stand on its feet on time to record a win. Thus, Iran took the head-to-head lead against Cuba at major world level tournaments (5-4). Interestingly, the Caribbean side prevailed in the first 4 encounters, while Iran won the next 4 matches, and now the 5th.

Cuba took the first 2 sets on a 2-point difference, establishing the dominance from the start of each one of these sets as if they already had the 3 returnees in the roster. But, they failed to finish off rivals and Iran came back from 2 sets down: 3-2 (23-25, 26-28, 25-17, 25-16, 15-10).

The diversity of Iran’s attack proved to be a decisive factor as they had 5 players in double digits, led by Ali Shafiei (20 points, including 3 aces) who was nearly perfect offensively (83.3%). Osniel Melgarejo and Marlon Yang scored 15 apiece for Cuba.

In the same pool, the hosts Russia turned the match against Mexico into a routine job, sweeping rivals in straight sets.

As much as 10 players of “Zbornaya“ put their names on the score sheet with Dmitriy Muserskiy being the top scorer with 8 points (87.5% attack success rate). Daniel Vargas scored 9 for Mexico.
