The Greek Men’s Volleyball Championship runners-up P.A.O.K. were forced to find the new head coach, only a few days before the start of the 2019/20 season.

Yuri Filippov resigned as P.A.O.K. head coach, giving a headache to the club officials knowing that the season is about to start in a few days. The resignation of the Ukrainian expert, who was appointed head coach during the play-off last season, has to do with the misbehavior of the two Cuban players – Dariel Albo and José Antonio Sandoval.

It seems that the problem between them and Filippov firstly appeared in the summer when they were engaged by the club without the coach’s consent. Recall that Albo was one of the accused players in the case of rape of the Finnish girl, three years ago, but was released from detention after two months. The next problem between the two players and Filippov occurred during pre-season when they were late to the training sessions on several occasions. In fact, the latest incident happened in the friendly match, a few days ago, in which both Albo and Sandoval reluctantly entered the game as substitutes, so Filipov decided not to use them. The Ukrainian expert then informed P.A.O.K. officials that he can no longer work with Cuban players and resigned.

Filippov was replaced with Kostas Delikostas, former assistant coach in the country’s male national team.

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Many Strength and Conditioning Coaches/Scoutman are trying to get into coaching. Due to their lack of experience and knowledge, at first, they take a major pay cut in comparison to actual volleyball coaches. Currently, coaching jobs are paying very little, even in the top leagues, and some of the experienced coaches are not taking jobs for 25.000-40.000 EUR, knowing that demands are just as high as before when they were making double of this salary. Unfortunately, club leaderships see coaches as a disposable matter and therefore keep dropping salaries because there are candidates that will take these jobs. I am not here to judge, just to describe some of the dynamics around this profession. Reply

POL M: Young Australian coach Reynolds will command Jastrzębski next season

Interesting trend, that some coaches who specialised on physical training, some who never played volleyball on top level, became pretty successful volleyball coaches. It can be observed in some menś and women teams. It reflects a situation that volleyball has become a very physical sport. Even the world champion country, which in past had taught others, needs coaches from abroad who come into this category. Reply
