AJM/FC Porto wrote down their name in the list of the female national Super Cup winners for the first time. In the 2019 edition of the event (official name: Supertaça Feminina), they beat three-time successive national champions Leixões SC.
Porto was established a month ago after closing the deal on a partnership with Academia José Moreira, who won the national Cup last season, and that was how they got the right to compete in the Super Cup. The female volleyball section of Porto also became a part of the famous FC Porto family, best known for the professional football team who was national champion 28 times but also European champion two times.
In a thrilling game played in the city of Vila Flora, Porto made a comeback from a two-set deficit: 3-2 (27-29, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-6). Bárbara Gomes, the newcomer to Porto from the vice-champions AVC Famalicão, top-scored for her team with 19 points. The import from Uruguay, María Noel Ruba, was Leixões’ most prolific player with 22 points, while the American Cara Cunningham (came from Virginia Tech University volleyball team, the Hokies) made 5 kill blocks.
