The news that Russia Men head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo negotiates with Zenit Saint Petersburg, despite having a valid contract with Kuzbass Kemerovo, occupies Russian sports media these days.

Alekno, the head coach of Zenit Kazan, said that he was also contacted by Zenit Saint Petersburg in order to take over their bench next season. But, for him, there was no dilemma in regard to this – he is 100% behind the project of Zenit Kazan.

“I perfectly understand the vision of Zenit Saint Petersburg, their capabilities and ambitions. First of all, next year I’ll need to take a break for health reasons. But, this isn’t the main thing. I have an agreement with the players, with the staff that I brought with me. We go hand in hand for 10 years. There’s club management in Kazan, there are friends, and this is incomparable. The main thing: I just couldn’t betray them. I found it necessary to fly to Saint Petersburg and to explain my position to them,“ Alekno stated for Bel.Ru.

A 5-time CEV Champions League winner with Zenit Kazan added that he was certain most of the players in his team would do the same in case of being contacted by Zenit Saint Petersburg.

„So what, is Maxim Mikhailov untouchable or something? Or Butko, Volvich? They can be contacted by any club. But, they have contracts with Zenit Kazan, there are agreements, and I’m sure that they would keep their word,“ Alekno added.
