At 28-28 in the first set of Italy – USA match, Italian players and coaching staff made a rarely seen pressure on a referee. And this is why.
Emanuele Birarelli served and the ball obviously touched Aaron Russell before going out of bounds. But the umpire from Belgium, Arturo Di Giacomo, showed the ball did not touch Russell. It was a sign for all Italian players on court, as well as for the coach Gianlorenzo Blengini, to run towards Di Giacomo.
Since there is no possibility for the video check on these kinds of situations, the referee decided to consult linesman and changed his initial call. The point went to Italy 29:28. In the next rally, the „Azzurri“ took the set 30-28.

We need more refereeing instances like this. Referees usually too stubborn with their decisions.
In last matches there were several controversial decisions/calls. Mostly they concerned double contacts, where players can not defend themselves. Unfortunately VChS is not used for verifying it yet. Moreover the TV company in Rio avoids to repeat such actions, not to mention to replay it in a super-slow motion. However it relates also to simple field touches. Thus controversial decisions can influence even top players and could have an impact on result. It is pity that does not exist any explanatory video, or analyses on a double contact on setting, now when exists a modern video-technology. Such decisions therefore could be considered many times as an attempt to manipulate matches.
