A huge investment in the squad started to pay off to the newcomers Sesc-RJ as they took over the lead in the standings of the Brazilian men’s volleyball championship Superliga by beating the titleholders Sada Cruzeiro at home in Round 13!

In the match that was marked with many complaints against the referees from both sides, which resulted with a few yellow cards and a red card for one of Cruzeiro players in the second set, and a huge energy transferred to the local players by their coach Giovane Gávio, Sesc prevailed in the tie-breaker against four-time defending champs, making the comeback twice – 3-2 (28-26, 20-25, 25-23, 19-25, 20-18) to establish themselves the Superliga leaders. Still, Cruzeiro will have the chance to return to the top spot in the standings already in two days when they will face Corinthians-Guarulhos in the postponed Round 12 game.

Sesc outside hitter Maurício Borges, who was a target of Cruzeiro complaints on several occasions, was the best scorer of his team with 16 points (6 served aces), while Maurício Souza made 15 points (4 kill blocks). In Cruzeiro, the Cuban Yoandy Leal delivered 18 points, while Rodrigo Telles „Alemão“ added 16 points. The players of both teams were highly nervous today, which was reflected in 27 service errors by the hosts and 25 by Cruzeiro!

This outcome of a derby went into the favor of Sesi-SP, who came close to the first-places Sesc to three points and to the second-placed Cruzeiro one point only! Namely, Sesi swept Ponta Grossa/Caramuru by a 3-0 with 14 points (4 kill blocks) by Alan Souza.

EMS Taubaté Funvic also returned to the title race as they defeated Copel/Telecom/Maringá on the road by a 3-1. Wallace Souza scored 22 points for the winning side.

First, there is derby because Sesc is a newborn in male volleyball. Second, it was a game marked by mistakes in refereeing and coincidentally against Sada Cruzeiro.
