Canada vs. Russia
Canadian National Team proved brave display and unfortunate loss to Brazil in inaugural match of the Final Six were not a mere coincidence as they swept favorites Russia in the second round of Pool J, 3-0 (25-23, 29-27, 25-17), in the weather conditions in Curitiba that were slightly better than yesterday (16 degrees).
The North American side was especially impressive in the third set but, which is more important for the Canadian fans, a block of John Gordon Perrin on Aleksandr Chefranov, that finished the match, marked the first-ever entrance of their national team in the semi-finals of the World League, whether as pool leaders or second placed. It depends on the outcome of Brazil vs. Russia encounter, tomorrow. Russia need a straight set win to go to the semis, while any other result takes the hosts among the best 4 teams in the torunament.
A 18-year-old opposite Sharone Vernon-Evans, who has just finished high-school and joined Polish club ONICO AZS Politechnika Warszawska, topped Canada with 14 points. Perrin added 12. In Russia, Egor Kliuka noted 11 points as the only player in his team with double digits.
