Melissa Vargas has applied for Turkish citizenship, report the local and foreign media.
There are laws in Turkey that allow applying for citizenship in various ways. If she takes some steps toward citizenship, FIVB also will need to improve it.
Melissa is the Cuban-born player and she had a debut in this national team at the age of 13. She is now 19 and there is plenty of time for her to play at the national team level. If Turkey accepts her application, it will be a huge reinforcement.

I think it is not fair to grant citizenship to an athlete (a top / skilled athlete) especially when the athlete does not have bloodline and / or birth right / place connections to the adopted country and to represent the adopted country in international world competitions. The granting of the citizenship main reason is to have an edge or advantage over other nation in Olympics and international world competitions. It is cheating.
Granting citizenship is ok, but the athlete should not be allowed to represent and compete for the adopted country in the Olympics and international world competitions. As professional, the athlete can compete in and for any team.
Re: @Go Hing So
I think you know nothing about fines that was imposed by Cuban Volleyball Federation. They lowered the category she compete. It means she can not compete in international tournaments.
Would you want to see her in Olympics and international world competitions? I think most of volleyball fans would. And She can also wants it. Maybe to play in these tournaments is her dream. If The Cuban federation prevents her from realizing her dream, she can find another way for it.
It is not cheating, It is to help a young volleyball star to realize her dream. Depends on where you look?
Re: @Azalin who are you trying to fool? Don’t buy the sense you talked about. The motive for granting citizenship by Turkey is to have greater probability of standing in the podium in the Olympics and international world competitions with her in the team. She is already playing in professional league / team. A local team / league won’t usually hire an average foreign player.
What is really the point of competition between countries in sports if it is easy to switch citizenship? Why not just have professional teams compete against each other instead. The poor countries would always be at a disadvantage since their gifted athletes would most likely change his/ her citizenship if it can be done and there are better financial opportunities in richer countries. It is like buying the athlete to represent the country that give one a new citizenship.
