Shanice, how did you get in contact with the club?
“Basically my manager just contacted me and told me that Dresdner SC was interested in me. My manager did let me know that it was a really good team and that they tried to get someone from Canada in their roster. So this was kind of my best option. I talked to Arnd Ludwig, my coach from Team Canada, about it and he had nothing but good things to say.”
What could Arnd tell you about the team?
“He told me that he used to coach them, I didn’t really know that. He said it was a really good club and that he really enjoyed working there. He thought it would be a good chance for me to play here.”
When did you start playing Volleyball and what was your motivation?
“I started playing when I was 12. I was really into running before and I thought that this would be my big thing. But I was tall so my elementary school team coach asked me to join the team and I did. I just kind of always preferred Volleyball since then.”
What did you study?
“I studied physical education. When I stop playing Volleyball I was thinking about being a teacher for younger students. With the University Award I just won this summer I got a scholarship for my master degree, so I will probably go back to school. I would really like to teach. “
What do you expect from your first experience in Europe?
“I don’t really know what to expect. I have always been away from home so that was already like living in a different country. It will be a new experience and I heard nothing but good things about the club and the city. So I am really looking forward to starting training with the team and afterwards will go out and explore the city. It looks really nice from what I could see already. Volleyball wise I would like to do really well. I heard that the team has a good reputation and I would like to keep that going.”
Your new club is going to play in the 2014 CEV Champions League. They will participate in that elite competition for the third time in a row. What do you expect from this adventure?
“To be honest I just found out what Champions League was a few weeks ago from my teammates in Team Canada. I think it will be a really great Volleyball experience. I have played international for Canada but I don’t think it is the same like playing in Champions League. The level is probably going to be pretty insane. I just want to do my best to perform well. “
What was your summer with the national team like?
“We trained a lot in Winnipeg. And we travelled to Peru in June, to Russia in July for the Universiade in Kazan and then we were in Nebraska for the NORCECA Championship. “
Do you come from a sports oriented family?
“Actually not really. My dad used to play American Football. My older sister played Volleyball but stopped, she is modelling now. My younger brother is still in school, he doesn’t play any sports. “
Did your parents encourage you to take that step?
“Yes, they just encouraged my decision. They kind of have to support me. They want to come visit me. “
What do you like to do in your free time?
“There is not that much free time. But I like playing Beach Volleyball and I love to dance. I used to dance a lot Hip Hop when I was younger. I really like to spend time with my family if I am ever home.”
Before the game, is there anything special you do?
“I don’t have any routines, but I do listen to music to get myself pumped up. If I can I like to dance, but kind of by myself.”
As a player, what do think what are your strengths and weaknesses?
“I think my strength as a player is that I have a really good ball control. Something that I want to work on is definitely my blocking. It has been something I have been working on with Arnd Ludwig this summer already. I have gotten better, but I can always improve.”
