The Greek Women’s Volleyball Championship has kicked off, and Panathinaikos, led by Croatian captain Martina Šamadan, opened the season with a convincing performances — signaling their ambition to chase the title.

“Panathinaikos is a big club; every season, we aim for the top,” said Šamadan from Athens. “Last year we stopped in the semifinals against Olympiakos, which still hurts, so this year we’re going all the way. We’ve added two Americans, one Polish player, and a new setter, so our lineup is stronger — and the league will be tougher than ever.”
Now in her third season with Panathinaikos, Šamadan says she feels at home in Greece. “Everything just fits — the club treats me professionally, the conditions are great, and life in Athens is wonderful. I’m happy here and will stay as long as they want me.”
Panathinaikos plans to continue their winning form and will also compete in the CEV Challenge Cup in November. “Our goals are always high. The Greek league is strong, and most teams are from Athens, so traveling is easy,” she added.
Martina also took on a mentor role with the Croatian national team this summer. “There’s a new generation coming in, much younger players, and I’m glad to help. The future of Croatian volleyball is bright.”
At 32, the 193 cm middle blocker isn’t thinking about retirement just yet. “I’ll play as long as I enjoy it and my body allows. For now, I’m focused on Panathinaikos — staying in the game, giving my best, and enjoying every moment,” Šamadan concluded.
