Bruno Rezende ’Bruninho’ has just finished amazing season with Italian Modena Volley by taking the title in one of the strongest leagues in the world. But, there is no time for him to rest since he had to take part in the 2016 FIVB World League and soon will compete at the Olympic Games in his country. For any Brazilian athlete, it has always been an ultimate challenge during which they have only one goal – the gold medal.

Bruno spoke for our website about the upcoming Olympics in Rio and reasons for leaving Modena. He revelaed which player from Modena was like a brother to him, shared thoughts about returning to Brazil’s Championship and danger of Zika virus.

Do you see World League only as one step towards Olympic Games or you put a pressure in front of you to win it?

„Of course, the most important competition this year are the Olympic Games and we try to prepare well for that without risking to have somebody got tired or injured. But we want to win, we play every match like it’s the final match. When you play for Brazil there is always pressure from our media, from our people and it’s normal. We are representing a country that loves volleyball and we always want to do our best.“

Is it your dream to win the Olympics and to do it in front of your people?

„Yes, that is our dream, very difficult dream to come true. So, we do all the sacrifice for this. We train very hard all day every day to try to be in the better shape for the Olympic Games to make this dream come true and gift it to our people.“

Which teams will be your toughest opponents in achieving that goal?

„I think that Men’s Volleyball competition is really equal. We have six teams that can be in the final – Russia, Poland, France, United States, Italy and Brazil. And you also have good teams that can beat these teams like Iran, maybe Argentina, Canada… and beacuse of that we are very motivated.“

What made you decide to leave Modena?

„It was tough decision. Modena is my home now, my second home. Maybe I would stay but… it was a difficult situation there. I couldn’t agree with some things inside the club. I’m not talking only about finances. I always did my best for the club and Modena will always be in my heart. Now, I’m coming to Brazil. We will try to be the best in Superliga. We must try to push the volleyball in the country and to make club competition good.“

Sada Cruzeiro Vôlei are reigning champions for many years in a row, do Sesi-SP have the chance to dethrone them?

„We must think we have the chance. With Simón, Leal, William, Evandro, I think they are favorites but I we also have a good team and we can play against them.“

You and Earvin Ngapeth seem to have a special friendship and generally team spirit was present in Modena season. Will you miss him?

„I will miss him so much. But not only him. We made a very good group there – Ngapeth, Petrić, Piano, Vettori, Nikić… I will miss them all, especially Petrić, my best friend. We were like brothers. I would really like to play with these guys again.“

Zika virus aspires to become huge threat for the athletes in Rio during Olympic Games. What is your point of view on that?

„We are not affraid. Maybe there is a danger but very little. If you are protected everything will be fine. So, the message for all the athletes is – don’t be affraid.“
