CWCH M: Trentino Diatec advances to final-four round

Defending champions Trentino Diatec of Italy qualified to the semifinals of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship with a comfortable straight-set victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) over Japan’s Panasonic Panthers on Friday at Divino Braga Gymnasium.

Trentino placed second in Pool A and will meet Russia’s Lokomotiv Novosibirsk in the final-four round to be played on Saturday. 

Tsvetan Sokolov was the best offensive player for Trentino with 13 points, followed by Filippo Lanza with 9 and Matteo Burgsthaler and Alexandre Ferreira with 7 apiece. 

Kunihiro Shimizu, who had registered a total of 48 points in the two previous matches, was stopped at 11 this time. Tatsuya Fukuzawa finished with 8 points. 

Trentino blanked the Panthers in the blocking category 15-0 with four players collecting three blocks apiece –Burgsthaler, Ferreira, Sokolov and Michele Fedrizzi

Alexandre Ferreira and Tsvetan Sokolov each scored five points in the first set to carry Trentino Diatec. The defending champions arrived into the first technical time-out 8-5 when Ferreira blocked Kunihiro ShimizuTrentino maintained the three-point margin at the second TTO (16-13). They never stopped and went on to take the first set 25-18. Tatsuya Fukuzawa scored four points for the Panasonic Panthers in the first set. 

It was the turn for Filippo Lanza in the second set. He scored three points in the early part for an 8-5 lead of Trentino. When play resumed Lanza scored two aces around one opponent error for the 11-5 score. The Italian team was in front 16-9 at the second TTO relying on the strong blocking from Ferreira and Matteo Burgsthaler. Trentino won the second set 25-19.

Panasonic took an 8-6 lead in the third set with consecutive spikes by Shinja Yamazoe and Shinji Kawamura to break the tie at 6-6. Trentino came back strong to win three consecutive points capped by the block by Sokolov against Shimizu. The Italian club was in front 16-15 at the second TTO. Michele Fedrizzi blocked Shimizu for a two-point difference (18-16) when the Panthers called for time-out. Fredizzi blocked Kawamura and Dante Amaral committed an attacking error from the back court for a 20-16 score. The third set closed at 25-22.
