It is now official: the Argentine Volleyball Federation (FeVA) has confirmed the end of Marcelo Méndez’s cycle as head coach of the men’s national team, a decision the coach himself announced after the last match of the World Championship.
“When we looked for a new coach back in 2019, Marcelo Méndez was the name we longed for. With recognition all over the world, we were able to make it happen,” FeVA recalled. “Today, seven years later, his cycle has become one of the most successful in our history – a journey full of emotions, but above all, with commitment and hard work, always keeping the national team as the priority.”
Méndez’s time with Argentina is closely tied to the unforgettable nights of the Tokyo Olympics, where the team battled through epic matches and celebrated the historic bronze medal against Brazil. But his legacy does not rest on that alone.
Under his guidance, Argentina won the South American Championship in 2023 in Brazil, the Pan American Cup in 2019, and earned strong results in the Volleyball Nations League, World Cups, World Championships, and qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Over these seven years, countless players passed through the national team, with changes, retirements, and new arrivals shaping the squad. Through it all, Méndez’s influence remained constant — his teaching, his methods, and his passion for the jersey.
In its farewell, FeVA expressed only gratitude: “We were lucky to enjoy one of the best coaches in world volleyball for a long time. He put Argentina among the elite of the sport. We hope this is just a ‘see you later.’ Thank you, Marcelo, and our best wishes in Trentino.”
