In Pool A, in a five-set thriller, Australia beat Qatar (25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 18-25, 15-10) for the first victory on the Asian Volleyball Championship.
Mark Lebedew, Head coach of Australia: “This tournament is very competitive. My players did a good job in the first two sets, but they were deconcentrated in the third and fourth set. In the fifth set, I took out Edgar because he had not played for a long time, and William was a good replacement and made a big contribution. Qatar was a tough opponent as they improved a lot”.
In the second match of Group A, Iran defeated Sri Lanka with 3: 0.
In the Pool B, Japan opens the tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-15, 25-11) over Hong Kong.
Yuichi Nakagaichi, Head coach of Japan: “My players were a bit nervous in the first set. From the second set onwards, my players took control of the match”.
In the second match of this group, Chinese Taipei were better than Thailand 3-1.
In Pool C we had another five-set thriller in which India beat Kazakhstan 3-2 (31-29, 25-14, 28-30, 18-25, 15-9). In the second match, China defeated Oman 3-1.
In Pool D Indonesia defeated Kuwait 3-1, while Korea beat Pakistan 3-0.
