Despite the fact the gold medal that Brazil won in the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix was his ninth in the tournament at the helm of the Women’s national team (since 2003), José Roberto Guimarães ’Zé Roberto’ admitted it was the hardest to grab of all.

„This is the ninth Grand Prix I won with this team, and it was the most complicated of all, in terms of logistics, the games, we were almost eliminated. We went through hassles, difficulties and took the title. We wanted to be without this much suffering, but there was no way. We almost left the competition twice. China helped us because they beat The Netherlands,“ Zé Roberto opened his soul to the media after the finals versus Italy.

„It was important for this group to play against these players from The Netherlands, China, Serbia, and Italy, to understand how this international world is different from the Superliga. All players could enter at any time and change the course of the game. That’s what we saw. Whoever came from the bench gave the new energy to the team,“ Brazil’s head coach explained the transition that his team went through after the 2016 Rio Olympics when a lot of stars (Thaísa, Sheilla, Fabiana…) said goodbye to the national team.
