Belgium were a set down twice in the match against Poland but still managed to silence well-packed stands in Łódź: 3-2 (20-25, 27-25, 20-25, 25-21, 17-15).

The “Yellow Tigers” desperately needed to win in order to have a chance to claim the second place in Pool B knowing the No.1 is out of their reach. Belgium finished their Preliminary Round campaign while Poland still have to play one more match, against pool leaders Italy, and can even earn the top spot.

Britt Herbots was a creator of several comebacks of Belgium today of which two were absolutely amazing (from 21-24 in the second set and from 7-11 in the tie-break). She scored 33 points, while Marlies Janssens served 6 aces. Malwina Smarzek-Godek was on a high level for Poland with 28 points. Agnieszka Kąkolewska made 6 kill blocks.

Britt Herbots, Belgium: ”I told my teammates yesterday that if we want to beat a stronger team which Poland definitely is we have to go a little crazy on the court. Among our today’s assets was our enthusiasm. It was a very nice game to watch, fans saw many amazing rallies. We managed to overcome all the difficult situations today, we really sticked together”

Slovenia

Slovenia

Slovenia achieved a historical result at European Championships. In their last game of Pool B, Slovenia survived a thriller against Ukraine in a direct duel for the No.4, which is the last spot in the pool that secures an advancement to the eighth-finals. Thus, Slovenia have qualified to the eliminations for the first time ever at continental tournaments.

Iza Mlakar and Lana Ščuka scored 21 points apiece for the winning side, while Saša Planinšec made as much as 10 kill blocks! Nadiia Kodola notched 19 points for Ukraine. Iryna Trushkina served 4 aces and Karyna Denysova made 5 kill blocks.

Sara Najdic, Slovenia: ”Yes, it’s true that promotion to the next round is a historical achievement for our team. We didn’t think about it before the match. We just believed in ourselves. Team spirit decided about our win. Self-confidence was really key here”
