In the 3rd round of the 2020 European Men’s Qualifying Tournament in Berlin, Slovenia chased away the hosts Germany after the marathon encounter: 3-2 (32-34, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12) in 138 minutes of a play! With this win, Slovenia have avoided deciding on their appearance in the semifinals on the last day of the pool stage, tomorrow, against the Czech Republic. Instead of that, in case of defeating the Czechs, they will have the chance to top Pool A and play No.2 from Pool B in the semis. Today, Germany was deprived of help from their main star György Grozer. The head coach Andrea Giani didn’t want to take any risks and left the starting opposite hitter on the bench because of the right calf injury which he sustained yesterday in the match against Belgium in which Germany have secured a spot in the semifinals. Klemen Čebulj tallied 25 points for Slovenia, including 4 aces. Grozer’s replacement in the line-up, Simon Hirsch, scored 18 points for Germany.
By losing to Belgium in the tie-break, the Czech Republic lost all chances of going into the semifinals and, subsequently, to the Olympic Games. Actually, both rivals said goodbye to the Tokyo event.
