As many as 126 clubs from 35 countries got registered for drawing of lots for the both 2018 Men’s and Women’s CEV Cup and CEV Challenge Cup at the CEV headquarters in Luxembourg City. Some of the last season’s winners will have the chance to defend the title while some won’t due to the fact they have qualified to some other tournament.
The 2017 Men’s CEV Cup winners, French Tours Volley-Ball, will contest the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup (playing in 1/16 Final with the better side of BVA Cup winners vs. Olympiacos Piraues /GRE/), whilst Dinamo Kazan of Russia, the 2017 Women’s CEV Cup title holders, will take part in the CEV Champions League, as from main stage.
Last season’s Men’s CEV Challenge Cup winners, Russian side Fakel Novy Urengoy, decided to withdraw from European contest, while the winners of Women’s CEV Challenge Cup in 2017, Turkish Bursa Büyükşehir Belediyespor, will have the chance to retain the trophy, playing with RSR Walfer of Luxembourg in 1/16 Final.
The most prominent clubs taking part in the 2018 Men’s CEV Cup are Russia’s powerhouse Belogorie Belgorod, Poland’s Asseco Resovia Rzeszów, Italy’s Calzedonia Verona and Turkey’s Ziraat Bankası Ankara.
Turkey’s Eczacıbaşı VitrA İstanbul is definitely the biggest name among featured teams in the Women’s CEV Cup along with Russia’s Uralochka-NTMK Sverdlovskaya Oblast and Italy’s duo Pomì Casalmaggiore and Unet Yamamay Busto Arsizio.
In addition, the eventual losers in the second and third rounds of the 2018 CEV Champions League (see the draw for Men’s CL and for Women’s CL), in both competitions, will join the CEV Cup.
