Iran exploited the fact that Italy came to Jiangmen, China, for the first week of the 2019 FIVB Nations League with a very renewed and rejuvenated group of players and collected all three points out of the opening match in the tournament. The “Azzurri” took the first set and had all in their hands in the second set but succumbed to the block of Iran, whose head coach Igor Kolaković brought the best possible squad at the moment to China. In the end, it was 3-1 for the current Asian Games champions, partially 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, and 25-23. Neither of the teams benefited from the rival’s unforced errors (33-33) but Iran were more focused in service (7-3). Both sides had a player with the same number of points as top scorers (20 points): Amir Ghafour from Iran and Gabriele Nelli from Italy.

Although their top scorer Moritz Reichert had only 36% attack success rate, and the three best scorers had 39.7% attack success rate on average, Germany managed to beat pool hosts China, and did it after five sets. Reichert ended the match with 12 points for Germany, while the key player for the European side was the backup opposite hitter Simon Hirsch who scored 4 points in the tie-break. Marcus Böhme made 4 kill blocks. Jiang Chuan, the tournament’s Preliminary Round top scorer in 2018, tallied 20 points for China of which he scored 5 in the tie-break. Liu Libin set up 5 kill blocks.
